Baby news – and charity knitting request

20th September 2011

Last week Simply Knitting’s deputy editor Rosie gave birth to a baby boy, prompting an outburst of cooing in the office. Fortunately he’s a healthy weight and size, for which we’re all grateful, but not all parents are so lucky.

Parents of premature babies have trouble finding clothes that don’t swamp their little ones, which is why Yarnsville and Artesano are supporting Lisa’s Stars, a charity that provides tiny clothing for babies who are born too early and makes a difference to those unfortunate enough to lose a child prematurely.

Using baby knitting wool kindly donated by Artesano Yarns, the Yarnsville Knit Night group, run by Lisa Bevan, create a wide range of tiny hats, blankets, burial gowns, teddy bears, bootees and angel pockets.

Currently the group consists of eight Wokingham knitters and crocheters, who work to provide these items to hospitals around the country, and to create memory boxes for those babies and their families so that they have their treasured baby's keepsakes to keep forever.

“It’s heartbreaking to create these tiny items. Some of the hats (such as the one above, left) are small enough to fit on a plum, and its devastating to see,” says Lisa Bevan. “But we are knitting a lot of love and warmth into every stitch and hope to be able to make a small difference to families affected by this tragic situation.”

The Yarnsville Knit Night group meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Jolly Farmer Pub in Hurst, Wokingham, from 7pm onwards. If you would like to offer your help and support in any way please contact Lisa Bevan on 0118 375 8338 or for more information.
