Juliet’s blog – Woolfest, wonderful Woolfest

12th July 2012

Juliet Bernard of The Knitter shares the joy of Woolfest 2012, despite rain, rain and more rain!

Woolfest – oh how it rained!  A whole month’s rain in just one day. The water flowed down the steps from the car park like a waterfall. My husband is from near Cockermouth so I am used to the Lake District being wet but this really was something else.

This was my first visit to Woolfest and as well as seeing old friends, like Heike Gittins and two of the ladies from my trip to Norway, I was meeting many people face to face for the first time. The thing about knitters is that just doesn’t matter, you still get a wonderfully warm welcome.

Ripplescraft at WoolfestHelen from Ripplescraft had her wonderful yarns displayed so charmingly (see left) and Kate Davies’ (officially the nicest person in hand knitting) stand was completely mobbed.

As always at any large gathering of knitters I learn something new, this time from Barbara who runs Ring A Rosie in Whitley bay. Barbara taught me a really nice cast on technique for socks called Jeny’s stretchy Slipknot Cast-on by Jeny Staiman which you can see on YouTube.

Sometimes sock cuffs can cut in to your calves a bit – this cast on is a great solution without losing elasticity. It took me a while to get the hang of this but the lovely Barbara was very patient with me!.

Jenny Pepper Felt ArtThere were so many wonderful exhibitors - I particularly loved the work of the felt artists, including the talented Jenny Pepper whose work is pictured here – as well as more yarn and fibre than you can imagine and even a few rare breeds along the way.

If you want to see details of the 160 exhibitors, the Woolfest website has all the information you will need.
