With a combination of cosy alpaca and virgin wool, Scheepjes' new Whirligig yarn will add a touch of decadence to your projects. The yarn glides through your hands and provides a truly luxurious crafting experience, as well as adding a little something extra to your finished projects. This gentle colour-changing yarn comes in 15 sumptuous shades and would make a very special gift for any knitter or crocheter.
Its sister yarn Whirligigette comes in seven matching solid colours, and the two yarns can be used in combination with each other as they have the same fibre content and DK weight. Both are a soft blend of 20% alpaca and 80% virgin wool, with Whirligig available in 450g/1,000m balls (approx £69), and Whirligigette in 100g/215m balls (approx £13).
"Natural fibres such as virgin wool and alpaca are considered luxury fibres and therefore the raw fibres we use to spin Whirligigs come at a considerably higher price than the cotton/acrylic in our regular Whirls," explains Simy from Scheepjes. "The Whirligigs are also double the weight of a regular Whirl, therefore also use a lot more fibre."
"The challenge with Whirligig is that in order to get that beautiful long gradient colour, you need to have 1,000m (450g)," says Simy, "so you need to buy the equivalent of 9 x 50g balls all in one go. […] The Whirligigs have several colours that all need to be dyed separately then joined to create that beautiful soft gradient."
Patterns for Whirligig include the beautiful crochet Valyria Shawl – and there are some fabulous knitting designs to come.
